Create a vertical ruler line. Draw out the shape of a tree using the Pen tool and right-click on the piece. Choose Make Guides.
Make two lines as below.
Draw the shape of half of a tree using the Pen tool.
Create a copy with the Reflect tool and move into place.
Choose the two opposing points and select Control-J to join the top and bottom points. Press Control+; to hide the guides.
The two bottom branches are now way out so select one point on the left and use the arrow keys to bring it in about 12 clicks. Do the same for the other side.
Make two squares side by side.
Select both the squares and pick Define Pattern to make a pattern.
Choose the tree and click on the fill square that contains the pattern.
Use the arrow keys to adjust the pattern.
Choose Expand and check Fill to make permanent.
